New Mexico Driver's License and Identification Card Examples

Revised May 5, 2008

IDNM - New Licenses and IDs issued beginning April, 2008

New Mexico's new drivers' licenses (DLs) and identification cards (IDs) are being introduced in a regionally phased implementation, beginning in April and scheduled for completion in June, 2008.

The new cards are centrally issued at a single, secure manufacturing facility, then mailed to the cardholder, who will generally receive the new DL or ID 7-10 days after the date of application.

At time of application at a New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) field office, the customer receives a temporary/extension card and is advised to carry his or her prior card (which is returned to the customer with a hole punched in it) with the temporary/extension document as back-up identification.

As with earlier license and ID series, customers who are under 21 years of age when the DL or ID card is issued receive a vertically formatted card. Here is an example of the new IDNM under-21 card.

The back of the under-21 card has the same appearance and horizontal format as the adult card.

EDL - Licenses and IDs issued between December 2001 and June 2008 and remaining in circulation until June or July, 2016

New Mexico's prior ("Enhanced Driver License" or "EDL") series of drivers' licenses (DLs) and identification cards (IDs) were issued beginning in December, 2001, and will continue to be issued until implementation of the new IDNM series is complete in June, 2008. Because many DLs are issued for eight years, and expire 30 days after the cardholder's birthday, EDL-series licenses and IDs may remain in circulation until June or July, 2016.

Here are samples of the adult (horizontal) and under-21 (vertical format) EDL licenses:

Pre-EDL Licenses and IDs remaining in circulation until December, 2010

Some pre-EDL licenses and IDs remain in circulation. The last pre-EDL cards will expire in December, 2010.
